Quiet lakes of Masuria: electric boat rules in Poland
Last updated 2026-10-12

At a glance
| Licence | Not needed for motorboats up to 10 kW. Above that, a patent sternika motorowodnego or higher. |
|---|---|
| Slow boats exemption | No licence for motorboats up to 75 kW and 13 m if top speed is limited to 15 km/h by design. |
| Minimum age | 14 to skipper a motorboat, sailboat or jet ski. |
| Registration | Not needed for inland motorboats up to 15 kW used for sport or recreation. |
| Lifejackets | Enough on board for everyone. |
| Lakes | District councils can ban combustion engines. Several Masurian lakes allow only electric motors. |
Poland is a country of lakes, and the Masurian Lake District is the best known: a chain of lakes and canals that sailors have long treated as home water. Motorboats are welcome on many of them. On some, only quiet ones.
For electric boaters, Poland is easy. A licence-free limit of 10 kW leaves plenty of room for electric outboards, and a special exemption covers slow boats up to 75 kW. Several district councils have gone further and closed lakes to combustion engines entirely.
We went through the national rules and the local bans so you know where to paddle out.
Paddle out under 10 kW: the licence
A licence is not needed for:
- motorboats with engines up to 10 kW,
- sailboats up to 7.5 m, which may carry an auxiliary motor,
- motorboats up to 75 kW with a hull up to 13 m, used for water tourism, if their top speed is limited by design to 15 km/h.
Above 10 kW, you need a patent sternika motorowodnego, the motorboat licence, or a higher qualification. The exam has a theory and a practical part.
The slow boat exemption is good news for electric day boats and houseboats. If the boat is built to go no faster than 15 km/h, motor power up to 75 kW does not trigger a licence.
Age limits: young locals welcome
The minimum age to skipper a motorboat, sailboat or jet ski is 14. Skippers under 16 may drive motorboats up to 60 kW.
Registration: no number for small quivers
You do not need to register:
- inland motorboats up to 15 kW,
- inland sailboats up to 12 m,
- human-powered craft,
as long as they are used only for sport or recreation. You may register them voluntarily.
Jet skis: same line-up as motorboats
Jet skis follow the motorboat rules. Most have more than 10 kW, so a licence is usually required, and the minimum age is 14. Wear a lifejacket and attach the kill cord.
Where they may ride depends on the water. Many lakes and protected areas have their own rules, and some ban motorised craft altogether. Avoid unlicensed rentals.
Masuria: the locals want quiet
This is where Poland gets interesting for electric boaters. District councils can ban combustion engines on lakes in their area, and several in Masuria have done so:
- Giżycko district. Six lakes and the Sapina river closed to combustion engines all year since 2008. Electric allowed.
- Pisz district. Lake Kaczerajno and two bays at Bełdany closed to combustion engines since 2011, with a noise limit of 45 dB(A). Electric allowed.
- Mrągowo district. 25 waters closed to combustion engines since 2003. The district does not state whether electric motors are allowed, so ask locally.
On-site signs are not always clear. Check the district's decision before you launch. Every lake with a source is in our register of electric-only waters in Poland.
Safety and alcohol: avoid the wipeout
Lifejackets and equipment
Boats must carry enough lifejackets for everyone on board, plus lifebuoys and fire extinguishers depending on the boat's size, power and equipment.
Alcohol
Polish law treats driving a boat under the influence as an offence, as on the road. We could not confirm the specific limits for recreational boaters from an official source. Do not drink and drive.
Our verdict: easy entry, quiet lakes
So, how does Poland treat electric boaters? Very well. Up to 10 kW you need no licence, slow boats up to 75 kW are exempt too, and small inland boats need no registration.
On top of that, several Masurian lakes allow electric as the only motor. Check the district's rules for your lake, carry lifejackets for everyone, and enjoy the quiet.
