Outboards
Under the cap: electric outboards for lakes with power limits
Which electric outboards fit European lake power limits of 500 W, 1 kW, 2.2 kW and 18.4 kW, from Tyrol and Upper Austria to Lac de Saint-Cassien.

You found the perfect lake. Turquoise water, mountains, and a rule that bans petrol engines. You load your electric boat, drive for six hours, and read the sign at the slipway: electric motors up to 500 W.
Your motor is 1 kW. The water police will drop in on you before you reach the first buoy.
This happens more than you would think. Many of Europe's best electric-friendly lakes also cap electric power, and the cap is often low. Here is how the limits work and which motors fit under them.
The caps: know the local break
A few of the limits we have confirmed:
| Water | Electric power limit |
|---|---|
| Tyrol, listed lakes | 500 W |
| Achensee, Tyrol | 2,200 W |
| Upper Austria, 17 smaller lakes | 500 W |
| Hallstätter See | 1,000 W |
| Lac de Saint-Cassien, France | 18.4 kW, at up to 10 km/h |
Sources: Tyrol regulation, Oö. Seen-Verkehrsverordnung, Préfet du Var.
Carinthia works differently. On Wörthersee, private electric boats of 4.4 kW or more fall under a quota (K-RSS). The full list, lake by lake, is in our electric-only waters register.
Under 500 W: the small quiver
This is the strictest class, and fewer motors fit than you might expect.
| Motor | Power | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| TEMO 450 | 450 W | 4.9 kg, integrated battery |
| Bixpy K-1 | 450 W | 38 lb thrust, 768 Wh battery |
| ePropulsion eLite | 500 W continuous, 750 W peak | 378 Wh integrated battery |
Sources: Plugboats, Kayaks & Paddles.
The eLite shows the catch. Its continuous rating sits on the limit, but its peak goes above it. Whether that matters depends on how the lake measures power.
Up to 1,000 W and 2,200 W: a bit more swell
At 1,000 W you have more choice, but boost modes need care.
- ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 Evo: 1 kW (Plugboats).
- Torqeedo Travel 1003: 1 kW (Plugboats).
- Thrustme Kicker: 1 kW, 4.4 kg (MBY).
- RemigoOne Neo: 1,000 W cruising, 1,500 W boost for 60 seconds (Pressmare). The boost may exceed a strict 1,000 W cap.
For a 2,200 W limit such as Achensee, motors such as the Torqeedo Cruise 2.0 at 2 kW, the Aquamot Trend 1.6 at 1.6 kW and Kräutler's outboarders from 0.5 to 2.2 kW input fit on paper (Plugboats).
How is power measured? The fine print
This is where many owners wipe out. Rules do not always say:
- Continuous or peak. Many motors have a boost or peak rating above their continuous one.
- Input or output. Some makers quote power drawn from the battery, others power at the propeller. Kräutler and Mercury, for example, publish input figures in the Plugboats guide.
- Motor or system. Whether two small motors count together.
If the rule is not clear, ask the lake authority in writing before you buy, with your motor's spec sheet. A motor that can be electronically limited, or set to a lower power mode, may help.
Above the caps: where bigger motors are welcome
Not every electric lake is a 500 W lake. Lac de Saint-Cassien allows electric boats up to 18.4 kW at up to 10 km/h (Préfet du Var). The Czech Republic bans combustion engines on 61 reservoirs without restricting pure electric motors. See the best lakes for electric boats.
Our verdict: buy for the lake you love
So, which electric outboard should you buy for lake boating? Start with the lake, not the motor. If your favourite water caps power at 500 W, buy a motor that fits under it with no boost, and accept a gentle pace.
If you want one motor for several lakes, match it to the strictest one you visit, or look at motors with selectable power modes. And when in doubt, ask the locals before you head out. Browse motors by class in trolling and kayak motors and small electric outboards.
Questions
Which electric outboards are under 500 W?
Examples include the TEMO 450 at 450 W and the Bixpy K-1 at 450 W. ePropulsion's eLite is rated at 500 W continuous but 750 W peak, so check how the lake measures power.
What is the power limit for electric boats on Austrian lakes?
It varies by lake. Tyrol allows electric motors up to 500 W on its listed lakes and 2,200 W on Achensee. Upper Austria allows 500 W on 17 smaller lakes and 1,000 W on Hallstätter See.
Does a 1 kW electric outboard fit a 1,000 W limit?
Usually, but watch out for boost modes. The RemigoOne Neo cruises at 1,000 W but boosts to 1,500 W for 60 seconds, which may exceed a strict 1,000 W limit.
How is the power limit measured?
Rules do not always say whether they mean continuous or peak power, or power drawn from the battery or delivered at the propeller. Ask the lake authority before you buy.
